Faulty Asphalt Shingles
Granule loss on asphalt shingles over time is common. However, Stonebridge has become aware of an issue with defects on certain asphalt shingles. The manufacturing issues with these shingles is leading to excess granule loss. Some of this excess granule loss is occurring on roofs less than 5 years old. The Jacksonville roofing professionals at Stonebridge Roofing, Waterproofing and Exteriors have been in contact with our manufacturer representatives about the issue. Most have recognized manufacturing defects with several of the roofs we have inspected and the warranties has typically covered replacement of the faulty shingles.
What Are Roofing Granules?
Granules in your asphalt shingle are actually small bits of the shingle’s top surface. Originally bonded to the shingle itself, small granules eventually break off, creating the gritty mass typically found on top of a roof. These granules are an essential component of the roof. They function to protect your shingles’ integrity from the elements. The first main purpose of asphalt shingles is to provide protection against the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays and extreme temperature changes. The granules physically block and limit the amount of sunlight (and heat) that can be absorbed by the individual shingles. This helps reduce the chances of the shingles warping or curling, which is often caused by uneven temperature distribution among the top and bottom layer of the shingles. Excess granule loss will also cause fading and leave you with a drab look, ruining the aesthetic appeal of your roof
